chapter  2
“Pioneer Girl” manuscript, Carl Brandt version, pages 111–15
Pages 5

When Wilder’s autobiographical memoir “ Pioneer Girl ” failed to sell, she decided to rewrite the material for the children’s market. Ultimately, she mined the entire manuscript for the Little House series. The excerpt below corresponds to the events covered at the end of Wilder’s sixth novel, The Long Winter . Readers familiar with the novel will immediately notice the similarity of language and material (as well as the difference in pacing and tone) between Wilder’s original first-person narrative and the polished, dramatized version she wrote for young readers.
