Left the ugly camp at 4:30 A.M. Nero tickled pink to get started. Drove through Columbus at 6 A.M. Beautiful German city. Rain last night. The air fresh and cool. No dust. Roads, these wonderful roads. Crossed Platte river flats and river on a long bridge, a short bridge, and another long bridge just before we entered Columbus. Each bridge a quarter of a mile long. One

narrow and one wide enough to pass if each car drove on lengthwise planks. Manly is spoiled by the wide smooth roads, so he could not stay on the planks. Says he don’t believe he will be able to drive when he gets home.
