ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we look beyond the boundaries of the People’s Republic of China to the Chinese community living overseas. ‘Overseas’ means outside China, by the Chinese definition. Taiwan is not ‘overseas’ in the Chinese sense, but it does have a business culture distinctly different from that of the PRC. So likewise do the Hongkong and Macao Special Administrative Regions (SARs), and comments up to this point about differences between PRC and overseas Chinese managers included Hongkong and Macao in the latter category. But with Hongkong and Macao formally back in the PRC, we will skip over them here, and concentrate on Taiwan and Southeast Asia. A number of these comments apply also to Chinese communities in other parts of the world.
