ABSTRACT

The technological aids available or under development for aviation securit were discussed in Chapters 6and 8. The importance o tightening security against both hijacking and aircraft sabotage wa highlighted by the massive mid-air bombs in the Air India and Pan America aircraft in 1985 and 1988 (killing 329 and 270 respectively) and the TWA an Kuwaiti Airlines hijacks in those same two years (Chapter 16). There ar other less spectacular incidents every year; there was in particular a spat of hijacking in Russia from 1990 to 1993. Such incidents also have politica and social effects out of proportion to the numbers killed; after the 198 TWA hijack to Beirut, in which one passenger was killed, it was reporte that 6 million Americans cancelled their flights to Europe and the Middl East during the subsequent year.
