ABSTRACT

The last chapter made reference to the Carnegie Scholars Program in the USA which maintains that, with appropriate guidance and support, practising teachers are capable of undertaking pedagogical research and contributing to our knowledge base about teaching and learning in higher education. In this chapter, I want to explore pedagogical research in more depth, focusing in particular on research into teaching excellence. Four themes which feature in the course of the discussion are:

Who will undertake this research? How will it be conducted? What should be the focus of research into teaching excellence in higher

education?’ What role might evidence play?
