ABSTRACT

At work on a series of writings about West Edmonton Mall (WEM), I collect shopping stories. In one of my conversations, Ojibway performance artist Rebecca Belmore describes how she once acted in an artist’s video tape shot at a Thunder Bay mall. Rebecca and her sister ‘played Indian’, circling round and round the mall in a car with a white driver while rapid-fire cash-register clatter sounded the attack. Mall as stockaded fort.
