ABSTRACT

The Marquis of Bute, who was probably the richest man of his generation, had his ‘Summer Smoking Room’ on the topmost floor of the Clock Tower at Cardiff Castle. Here he was above the mundane world. The alterations that were done to the castle for him during the mid nineteenth century were designed by William Purges. He created ‘special’ worlds at the top of each of the castle’s five towers, whilst in the basement was a vaulted cellar.
