ABSTRACT

While the peripheral regions are full of smokeless homes, the cities grow and develop. This chapter deals with the research on everyday life in the cities of the EEC with more emphasis on the ordinary citydwellers, rather than the élites or the middle classes. There are four main issues in this chapter: 1 the city or town as a symbol of a civilised lifestyle, 2 the pull of the urban area as a destination for migrants, 3 the research on everyday life in towns and cities, 4 the use of space in towns and cities by different classes and by

men and women.
