ABSTRACT

The Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) are central to the EEC and thus to all of western Europe. There are useful books about their origins and development (e.g. Clout, 1984; Hill, 1984; and Wise, 1984) and they are not discussed in detail here. Like the book as a whole this chapter is focused at the micro-level: it is about the life of a fisherman putting out from a harbour in Brittany, a shepherd moving sheep up and down the mountains of rural Greece and a farmer growing potatoes in Ayrshire or grapes in Portugal or olives in Spain.
