ABSTRACT
Phénoménologie de la Perception opens with the question ‘What is phenomenology?’ (PPT, vii).1 In this chapter I shall answer the question by evaluating Merleau-Ponty’s own answer to it. His answer largely consists in a critical appraisal of some tenets of Husserl’s phenomenology.
