ABSTRACT
The Aral Sea was an important shipping route and supported a fishing industry. Its environs provided a source of muskrat pelts, whilst its reed beds supplied raw materials for a local papermaking and packaging company. Extensive forests gave shelter to migrating birds, a home for some rare animals and a natural barrier to erosion.
