ABSTRACT
We may now be able to answer, or at least formulate more precisely, some of the questions raised in Chapter 1 and in the preface to the present section. What provisional theoretical deductions can we draw from this cursory survey of the relations between different communities in the ancient world, before we proceed to a more detailed look at the European experience?
