ABSTRACT

This chapter investigates advanced and innovative interpretations of the basic concepts underlying the learning object (LO) paradigm. We believe that it is necessary to start a new research cycle on more advanced models and methodologies for LOs. More specifically, we want to investigate:

• a taxonomy of LOs and their components; • a component architecture for structuring composite LOs, and enabling their components

to interact; • the processes of aggregation and disassembly to produce new or repurpose existing

LOs; and • determinants for the efficiency and effectiveness of LO repurposing, and how these can

be influenced by appropriate design methodologies.
