ABSTRACT

Explor@2 is the result of a long process that started a decade ago at Télé-université’s research centre LICEF. The initial research efforts (Paquette, 1995) focused on a Virtual Learning Center (VLC) model, architecture and prototypes. To build the VLC model, object-oriented modelling techniques were applied, for example Jacobson’s use cases methodology (Jacobson, 1993) and object models (Rumbaugh et al., 1991). These were used to identify sets of actions that different actors would do while interacting within a virtual campus. Five theoretical actors were identified within a VLC: the learner, the trainer, the content expert (informer), designer, and manager. Sixty-three roles were defined for the various actors.
