ABSTRACT

The success of Eastbank’s Assertive Discipline System depended partly on the computer’s potential for giving instant access to trends and statistics. All detentions and referrals to the remove room were logged onto the computer along with the name of the relevant teacher. This ensured that individual pupils’ behaviour could be tracked and monitored. Pastoral care staff could easily see in what areas of the curriculum and with what members of staff problems seemed to be occurring for particular pupils, and take steps to remedy the situation. It was through using the system, for instance, that staff became fully aware how many pupils were misbehaving because they could not cope with the work. The computer records also provided facts with which the school could discuss pupils’ behaviour with their parents, and, if necessary, refer a pupil to the governors with the possibility of suspension. They created a concrete base for cooperative action between the school and the parents.
