ABSTRACT

To a significant extent, the quality of an author's dissertation will be judged by examiners on the rigour and consistency of the author's referencing and Bibliography compilation (and of course on the choices of references). Comprehensive reference to relevant work of other authors is an essential part of research presentation. Such reference indicates the author's knowledge of the field in which the research is located and is also used to provide an appropriate context for matter arising in the research itself. References to the work of others need to be made with discretion. It is important that all references are directly relevant and pertinent to the research project and are not included simply to demonstrate the breadth and extent of the author's reading. However, it is unwise to include references just for the sake of demonstrating wide reading.
