ABSTRACT
Why did we start on these projects? The simple answer is that there was funding available from the Scottish Funding Council’s investment in wide-area networks (UMI, 2001). FINESSE was funded under the SHEFC Use-of-the-MAN Initiative II; TAGS is funded by SHEFC SCOTCIT. We already had experience of a joint project between the educational experts at Dundee and the software team at St Andrews, which explored a business game on a multi-user spreadsheet. It was easy to identify a specific educational need (that of improving the group game already in use in a different subject area) that could be transferred to newer technologies. In addition, we understood the technological requirements of the proposed task, and we knew that we could work effectively as a group despite the different subject areas and institutional settings involved.
