ABSTRACT

In an interview given shortly after the French publication of Time and Narrative, Paul Ricoeur stated that one of the pressing tasks facing contemporary culture is to ensure a creative relationship between tradition and Utopia.1 In what follows, I propose to examine (1) what exactly Ricoeur means by tradition; and (2) how tradition may be positively related to Utopia through a critical hermeneutics of myth.
