ABSTRACT
The growth in participation in higher education during the last decade and measures to widen access are bringing into the university system students from a broad spectrum of ability and from diverse backgrounds. These factors present an enormous challenge to university lecturers who are expected to ‘combine the talents of scholar, writer, producer, comedian, showman and teacher in ways that contribute to student learning’ (McKeachie, 1994).
