ABSTRACT

John Sampson (1862-1931) was a Romany scholar, a comparative philologist and the first Librarian of the University of Liverpool. He wrote an essay about laudatory annotations by one ‘G. O.’ which he found in the 1639 edition of Donne’s poems1 (‘A Contemporary Light upon John Donne’, Essays and Studies by Members of the English Association, 7 (1921), 82-107).
