ABSTRACT
David Hannay (1853-1934) wrote a number of books on various aspects of the Navy and Merchant Navy, as well as several biographies, including one of Frederick Marryat and one of Tobias Smollett. His cultural history The Later Renaissance covered not only England but Spain, France and Italy too; it went through several impressions. Donne was given a passing mention (The Later Renaissance, 1898, p. 220).
