Hardy had evidently read Donne attentively, for he gave line 44 of Elegy 12, ‘His Parting From Her’, as the ironic epigraph to a section in a short story. (‘Enter A Dragoon’, Harper’s Monthly Magazine, December 1900, p. 29a).
