ABSTRACT

There are many different levels of engagement within schools. It is the most personal and individual level that affects all pupils. We know that, whatever the surface matter relating to the lesson, there are all kinds of disconnected thoughts that are taking place, sometimes in addition to, sometimes as an alternative to, the matter in hand. Even whilst someone is trying to concentrate, the mind will occasionally stray, into images and associations and a critical scrutiny of what is taking place. There will also be moments of almost deliberate abstraction, of day-dreams or a series of thoughts that have little to do with what is formally taking place. And then there are the other distractions, the disturbances, the other social life of the school.
