ABSTRACT

The choice available to the institution of which media to use can therefore be very wide, with costs and retention issues riding on the outcomes of that choice. It is difficult to draw clear conclusions for any particular institution about what media work best for its particular students. Different media may also be appropriate at different stages in a student's studies. For any student the points will appear in different places and students will choose their media accordingly. There may be a 'usage line' where media inside the line will be used and media outside not used. Any institution faced with a bewildering array of media choices will need to pick a path between cost to the institution and the effectiveness of the media with different students. Some institutions in developing countries may appear to have little choice of media: computers may be out of reach probably for years to come.
