ABSTRACT
Leaders motivate those around them, particularly those directly responsible to them. The capacity to motivate is allied to the capacity to support and encourage individuals. The head and the leadership team need to ‘walk the talk’ and act as role models for the values and mission of the school. This is particularly the case with education for active citizenship. The schools that most strongly encourage young people to become active citizens are schools where the head and staff are experienced as active citizens within the school.
