ABSTRACT

The roles of teacher and researcher can be very difficult to combine in the classroom. The main role of the teacher traditionally has been one of guiding, encouraging and challenging learners while at the same time juggling the logistics of a typical classroom situation. The notion of research within that tradition was one of collecting assignments and materials after students experienced certain learning conditions and then analyzing the resultant learning. Analyses of student learning were thus done after the process of learning had occurred. Assumptions then had to be made about what happened during the learning process.
