ABSTRACT

Many of the received ideas about the democratic role of the media derive from a frockcoated world where the ‘media’ consisted principally of small-circulation, political publications and the state was still dominated by a landed elite. The result is a legacy of old saws, which bear very little relationship to contemporary reality. They need to be reassessed.1
