Introduction

It was a woman, Octavia Hill, who first raised awareness of housing management at the end of the nineteenth century. From 1912 women who had worked with her were beginning to form their own organisations. A separate women housing managers’ society existed from 1932 to 1948, doing pioneering work and exerting a considerable influence. From 1948 men were able to become members, but women remained in the majority.
