Agricultural Pollution

Pollution of the environment is defined in the Environmental Protection Act 1991 as ‘the release (into any environmental medium) from any process of substances which are capable of causing harm to man or any other living organisms supported by the environment’. Essentially there are four types of agricultural pollution: •

pollution of the land or soil

air pollution

•

water pollution

•

pollution of food, that is, of farm crops and animals (for example through pesticide residues).
