ABSTRACT
The aim of this chapter is to assess the origins and development of the understanding of causation in infancy. This is crucial to the grounding of the causal powers theory: for a certain concept to be basic to the psychological construction of reality almost certainly means that it is laid down early in life, or there from the start. The research discussed here is also relevant to the origin of the basic concept of action, with which I shall deal in a later chapter.
