ABSTRACT
Most visitors to Stonehenge are unaware that its development spanned a very long period of Britain’s prehistory, beginning many centuries before the sarsen monument at the centre was built.1 The softly weathered and grassed bank and ditch that unobtrusively ring the sarsen stones were created a thousand years before the sarsen building and there are suggestions that a structure of some sort existed there even earlier.2
