ABSTRACT

In response to the invitation of Dr Grete Leutz, Augusto Boal gave the keynote speech at the tenth covention of the IAGP (International Association of Group Psychotherapy), held in the summer of 1989 in Amsterdam.1 The convention’s theme was “Encounter or Alienation?: The Importance of the Group in Modern Society.” In his speech, entitled “Individual and Society,” Boal describe, in a graphic and breathtaking way, the origins of his work method. He spoke about the values and social functions of theatre, comparing the theatre stage to a magnifying glass on which human impulses, passions, and conflicts are played out. Boal described dramaturgy as the origin of human action and drama as the place where deep pshychological processes are expressed.
