ABSTRACT

The TIE movement, during its short history, has had to rely almost entirely on its practitioners for its material. Its whole history has been one of self-devised work either with or without writers, so the central activity of most teams has been devising. The devising process has differed much from company to company and cannot be discussed as if there were one definitive method or as if the process were not always in a state of change. What follows then will inevitably not satisfy all schools of thought on the matter and within the space of one article it certainly cannot be comprehensive, but I shall attempt to deal briefly with the major factors, restrictions, responsibilities and skills in relation to devising.
