ABSTRACT

Marry a village man? When I was first doing fieldwork in Greece, over twenty years ago,2 the idea would have seemed quite strange, even unthinkable. Villagers belonged to a world very far from mine, and we were further separated by education and by class. And although Greek men in tourist areas might have affairs with foreign women, most of the village men I knew were excluded from such activities by their lack of knowledge of foreign languages and their lack of contact with tourists. As for myself, not only was I married and accompanied by my husband when I first went to Greece, I was also determined that, married or not, I would cause no scandal or gossip within the village, and so was very careful in all my behavior, but especially my behavior with men.3
