ABSTRACT

Despite its unusualness, the usefulness of the tag ‘rectitude’ can be brought out by comparison with two notions that have been given attention in the recent literature and that could be confused with it. One is ‘reliability’ and the other is ‘epistemic responsibility’ (Code 1987). Not denying the interest of these two concepts, I do want to keep them separate from what I aim to attribute to Descartes as an interest in doxastic rectitude.
