ABSTRACT

The debate about the fact-value distinction in Max Weber’s Wissenschaftslehre is probably the most misunderstood and misleading feature of Weberian sociology. Rather than seeking to terminate political debate, Weber’s philosophy of social science sought to establish the scientific grounds on which sociologists could enter into political controversy. Weber’s philosophy of social science and his political views about capitalism were in fact closely related (Löwith 1982). If Weber is worth reading, then his political sociology ought to be relevant to modern circumstances.
