ABSTRACT

The war had an immeasurable impact on home conditions. Building stopped, as in the First World War, but there was the additional burden of rebuilding bombed cities-London, Coventry, Birmingham, Liverpool, and Manchester all had flattened areas. Three-quarters of a million houses were destroyed or severely damaged. The evacuation of women and children during the early years of the war had highlighted problems of education, health, and poverty in the slums (Women’s Group on Public Welfare 19391942).
