ABSTRACT

Danish urban housing movements developed slowly. In 1850, only one in twenty Danes lived in cities. The rest were still on the land or in small rural settlements. The standard Danish house was timber-framed with clay or brick infill and thatch roof. Many such traditional houses survive in town, village and countryside and there was a ready transference of frame building from ancient to modern building systems, often relying on the same concept, either in timber, steel, or concrete.
