ABSTRACT

The task of education departments in prisons is to provide a variety of learning opportunities for prisoners: academic, artistic, recreational and vocational. Currently huge variations exist in this provision nationally and internationally, depending on policies, resources and the type, function and regime of each establishment. Increasing discussion of conditions in prison, coupled with a greater awareness of the need for constructive activities are steadily moving education to a more central position. A more holistic approach is being sought, in which the cooperation of prison officers is a crucial ingredient.
