ABSTRACT
Imperative sentences are used to give commands and directions. In Cantonese, they are also much used to make requests, in a manner which may seem direct to a Western ear. For example, where English would use a modal verb as in 'Would you . . .?' an imperative sentence may be used in Cantonese:
