ABSTRACT

Writing an ethnography is not simply the transformation of field notes into publishable text; it is the process of turning a dialogue between researcher and researched into a narrative. In order for the finished narrative to be understood, the process of its construction must be explored and the terms on which the dialogue took place exposed. It is such an exploration and exposition which this chapter attempts and, since the need for them is rooted in the recognition of the importance of bringing the subject into the ethnographic process, it is a chapter which must be written in the first person.
