ABSTRACT

Your maternal grandparents were Russian Jews who escaped with their daughter from the great purges of Stalin by crossing the Urals on foot, eventually traveling on a Japanese boat to Singapore, and then making the journey to South Africa and finally to Argentina in 1931. I remember the comment you made that it was ironic that your grandparents escaped communism only to have their daughter marry a famous Argentine communist-your father, Rudolpho. Learning about your history reminded me of the early struggles of Freire-his imprisonment and his exile for seventeen years. Which brings me to the point of our interview. Can you describe your first encounter with Freire’s work? At what point in your life did you first become aware of his writings?
