ABSTRACT

Is there too much violence on television? To answer this question, I am calling on two gurus, both expert in their own ways. My first authority wishes to remain nameless, but is a member of the National Council for Families and Television: “I believe we have made significant improvements in cutting down the amount of violence-usually totally gratuitous-on television in recent years. But, the council still receives many complaints about violent scenes. Recently, the trend seems to be violence against women. This is very disturbing and is sure to have a detrimental impact on the viewing audience. I am particularly concerned about children who are allowed to stay up late to watch what we euphemistically call adult programs.”
