ABSTRACT

In 1914 owner-occupation accounted for only 10.6 per cent of the housing stock of the United Kingdom, but largely owing to extensive housebuilding subsequently (except during the First and Second World Wars and their immediate aftermath), the proportion reached 67.6 per cent in 1999-significantly more than in most other European countries, although in the USA and Australia some 70-75 per cent of dwellings were owneroccupied. In Scotland, however, the proportion of owneroccupation is somewhat less than in the rest of Great Britain-only 62.4 per cent in 1999.
