ABSTRACT

In relation to housing, community support is high on the social and political agenda in the United Kingdom. In recent years it has been argued that the growth in the use of private and independent agencies by government could result in the gradual decline of the provision of community support within the public sector. Within this context, this chapter:

• defines the term ‘community care’; • discusses developments in its application; • considers housing for special needs; • examines community support in practice; and • analyses the Supporting People programme-the most recent policy initiative

concerned with community support.
