ABSTRACT

Economic disadvantage, social exclusion and institutional racism have all helped to perpetuate relatively poor housing for the majority of black and Asian households in Britain, and have inhibited both market forces and public policy from satisfying housing needs across much of this segment of the population. This chapter:

• begins by exploring some of the consequences of discrimination that black and Asian households have experienced when attempting to gain access to appropriate housing, and the effect of housing policies;

• analyses institutional and structural racism; • discusses issues concerning black and Asian households and home-lessness; and • examines aspects of racial harassment within the context of previous and more recent

legislation and research.
