ABSTRACT

In this chapter, John Bastiani, visiting professor in Education at Nottingham Trent University, writes about the growth of supplementary school provision and the need for a greater understanding of its aims and nature. He draws upon a study of three Saturday Schools in South London, which was informed by the views of parents and children. He suggests that supplementary schools offer much that enable the educational progress of black and bilingual pupils and that these schools are therefore in a strong position to inform mainstream thinking if it is willing to listen.
