ABSTRACT
The Johannesburg Earth Summit in September 2002 provided an excellent opportunity to raise teachers’ and pupils’ awareness about global citizenship and to engage them in in-depth studies of local environmental issues that make explicit the link between local and global issues. The creation of a curriculum development project based around the Earth Summit also provided a tangible exemplification to enhance teachers’ understanding of education for sustainable development (ESD).
