ABSTRACT

The Framework is explicit and very specific in both content and teaching methods, providing a structure that was built upon a year-by-year format setting out clear expectations for each year group. It gives teachers and teaching assistants a detailed structure of the skills identified as essential to the literate 11-year-old. The training aimed to ensure that all concerned understood basic grammatical terminology regardless of their subject specialism. Many previously exotic terms - morpheme, grapheme, phoneme - became everyday words in the staffroom and this common language empowered many staff, particularly teaching assistants, to participate in discussions and planning for the first time.
