ABSTRACT

Today, Mercosur stands out as a regional trade organisation aiming to economically integrate its full members – Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Venezuela. Mercosur’s full name, Common Market of the South, reveals its primary objective and purpose. However, digging into Mercosur’s history and looking beyond its present institutional structure uncovers a less visible function of the association; that of being a regional security actor around which certain security conceptions are articulated and translated into security practices.
